Jeremy Jagger's Monthly Blog – July 2024

Another month has flown by and at the time of writing we are now fully into the school Summer holidays.  It is always nice to see the Children’s Play Area, Tractor Barn and Archie’s Nature Walk being put to such good use!

The Tractor Barn itself has had a new edition thanks to a joint venture between ourselves and Rea Valley Tractors.  Some interpretation boards have been added outlining the story of how some of our food is produced using our very own Beef and Ale pie as an example. Hopefully this will prove informative for readers both young and not so young.

Despite this year’s Battle reenactment event sadly having to be postponed until next year, the anniversary of the battle did not go unnoticed thanks to the unveiling of a life sized portrait of Harry Hotspur. Painted by Welsh artist Stephen Hopper, the portrait was unveiled at Battlefield’s St Mary Magdalene Church on 21st July – the date of the battle and also Hotspur’s death.

Swiftly onto a brighter note our Tack Room ice cream and coffee kiosk is now open every day offering a quick fix of Iron & Fire coffee and Laura’s homemade ice creams along with biscuits, crisps and other snacks to enjoy on the go. Do drop by, it is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 3pm on Sundays.

Onto the farm and with the harvest just beginning, the barns have now been cleaned ready for the first loads of grain to come in from the fields.  The combine has made a start with a couple of fields of Winter Barley now cut. This will now be all for a couple of weeks until the Spring Barley and then the Wheat is ripe enough to cut.

With the drier weather improving ground conditions, we are now able to get into the woods again to start general tidying up and clearing previously overgrown areas.  This will also allow us to replenish wood stocks ready for our wood burner at Battlefield.

As always, thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you on site soon.
